One moment referee Marc Janssens (59) feels top fit and the next moment he is lying flat on the football field. A cardiac arrest. Bystanders see it happen, do not hesitate for a moment and rush to his aid.
“Marc suddenly seemed to stumble. When we got to him, his eyes were wide open. He gasped for air. I thought it was an epileptic seizure, took off my sweater and put it under his head and put him in a safety position. But then his color changed. We saw him completely stiffen. He sighed again and then his breathing stopped.”
In a moving article in Nieuwsblad, Marc Janssens (59) talks about his cardiac arrest and you can read how ‘his’ heroes saved his life with an AED. The article paints a poignant picture of resuscitation and shows what the incident does to both the victim and the emergency worker(s).
The big lesson: daring and being able to resuscitate quickly with an AED saves lives!
