Cyclist collapses after cycling trip and is successfully resuscitated

Italian cyclist Sonny Colbrelli, who won Paris-Roubaix in 2021, collapsed in March 2022 after the finish of what now appears to be his last race. He crossed the line second in the Tour of Catalonia in the stage to Sant Feliu de Guíxols and suffered a cardiac arrest immediately afterwards. After a successful resuscitation, he was brought to the hospital of Gerona. There, the cause was quickly determined: cardiac arrhythmias.

Mandatory retirement due to regulations

Those heart problems are now under control thanks to an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) and Colbrelli says he feels good. He was determined to return to the cycling team, but regulations prevented this. In Italy, top sport with an ICD is prohibited.
